UFC on ESPN 9 results: Billy Quarantillo earns unanimous decision in crazy war with Spike Carlyle
Billy Quarantillo and Spike Carlyle might enjoy a “Fight of the Night” bonus after their crazy back-and-forth war on the main card at UFC on ESPN 9.
Wild exchanges on the feet and on the ground highlighted the three round battle but in the end it was Quarantillo who notched his seventh straight win overall as he earned a unanimous decision victory. All three judges scored the fight 29-28 with Quarantillo getting the nod.
“That was a wild fight,” Quarantillo said. “I loved that one. You bet your ass in the next one, I’m going for the kill.
Like a ball of fire, Carlyle came out charging as soon as he was released from the corner, throwing a kick at Quarantillo and then unleashing a flurry of strikes. Carlyle stayed on the attack throughout the opening round with Quarantillo showing incredible patience to avoid taking too much damage and allowing the “Alpha Ginger” to expend as much energy as possible.

Quarantillo invited Carlyle to continue with his aggressive attacks while seeking to take advantage of the wild scrambles. With each passing minute, Quarantillo was trying to push the pace with a variety of strikes and submission attempts but Carlyle refused to back down despite his gas tank starting to run low.

Carlyle was relentless even as his conditioning was fading but Quarantillo was making him work during every second of every round. As the third round was ticking away, Quarantillo was fishing for submissions and hammering away at Carlyle on the ground in a final attempt to either get the finish or sway the judges in his favor.
Ultimately, Quarantillo did enough to secure the decision as he picks up his second win in the UFC after making his octagon debut last year.
