UFC on ESPN 9 results: Sakai edges out Ivanov, Dern subs Cifers with kneebar

On the UFC on ESPN 8 main card, Augusto Sakai won a split decision over Blagoy Ivanov, and Mackenzie Dern caught Hannah Cifers in a kneebar.

The UFC on ESPN 9 main card is in progress and the co-main event just witnessed #12 ranked heavyweight, Blagoy Ivanov, slug it out with the #13 ranked, Augusto Sakai. Ivanov was focused on his punches while Sakai was employing his kicks. It was a tightly contested affair, but it was Sakai who walked away with the split decision victory. That’s four up and four down for Sakai in the UFC.

Before that, Billy Quarantillo and Spike Carlyle waged absolute war for three rounds. Carlyle started strong and carried that momentum into the second round. Quarantillo began to rally and get himself back into the fight, and then he completely dominated Carlyle for the bulk of the final frame. After the dust had settled, the judges saw the fight 29-28 for Quarantillo who is now 2-0 under the UFC banner.

Also on the main card, Roosevelt Roberts secured a second-round rear-naked choke on Brok Weaver. Roberts was having some success with his striking in open space, but had an even better time once he secured a takedown. Roberts has now racked up back to back wins and sits at 4-1 inside of the UFC. Opening up the main card, BJJ ace Mackenzie Dern pulled off a first-round kneebar on Hannah Cifers. It was a bit of a struggle for Dern to get the takedown, but once she finally did it didn’t take very long before a tap was achieved. Dern is now back in the win column and her UFC record improves to 3-1.

Main card:

Augusto Sakai def. Blagoy Ivanov by split decision (29-28 x2, 27-30): Heavyweight

Some feeling pout went on to start the co-main event, with Ivanov taking the center and Sakai playing the outside. They exchanged one strike at a time, with neither man really wanting to open up. Ivanov was the one pressing the action, punching his way into the clinch against the fence. Sakai would escape into open space and landed a couple of stinging leg kicks.

Ivanov showed up in the second round winging and connecting with punches to the head and body. Sakai stuck with his leg kicks, and even buckled Blagoy at one point. Both men were scoring with their strikes, but neither man was able to take over on the feet. With less than a minute remaining before the bell, Ivanov scored a takedown and kept it.

Sakai kept mixing up his kicking tactics, going to the legs and body. Ivanov stayed true to his haymakers, but wasn’t landing as often as his opposition. Ivanov was close to a takedown, but Sakai grabbed the fence to remain standing. No point was deducted for the infraction. Ivanov brought the pressure down the stretch, swinging his hooks and backing up Sakai.

Billy Quarantillo def. Spike Carlyle by unanimous decision (29-28 x3): 150-pounds

Carlyle went right at his opponent with a flying straight kick that seemed to daze Quarantillo. Carlyle remained aggressive and Quarantillo looked for a takedown, but several brutal elbows and hammerfists came firing down. Quarantillo gave up his back and at some more punches. Carlyle ended up on the bottom after botching an armbar, but was ultimately able to spin on top and get back to work. Carlyle stood up with about four-seconds left in the round and began walking away. Quarantillo pounced with a haymaker that floored Carlyle, following by him taking top position.

An elbow from Carlyle on the feet rocked Quarantillo right away in the seocnd round, but the ensuing scramble resulted in Quarantillo on top. Carlyle worked his way back on top, prompting Quarantillo to rally to get back to his feet. The fighters scrambled back and forth, jockeying for position, with Quarantillo catching a triangle towards the end off the round. Carlyle escaped, but ate a couple of elbows for his troubles.

The fighters locked up to start the final round, with Quarantillo being the one who pulled out the takedown. Some devastating elbows came crashing down from Quarantillo, before fully committing for an RNC. Carlyle hung tough and escaped on top, but had to fend off a couple of triangle attempts. Quarantillo scrambled yet again and found the back, dropping a plethora of strikes. Carlyle somehow stood to his feet and the men stood and wildly slugged it out for final ten-seconds.

Roosevelt Roberts def. Brok Weaver by submission at 3:26 of round 2: Lightweight

Weaver closed the distance right out of the gate, but Roberts wouldn’t be controlled. In open space, Roberts was landing clean solo punches. Weaver kept closing the distance and pushing his opponent against the fence, but didn’t really do much when he was in those positions.

Roberts clipped his foe with a counter combo that staggered Weaver to open the second round. Weaver tried to hold Roberts against the cage again, but just couldn’t keep the position. Roberts ended up getting a takedown and worked his way into the full mount. He attacked an RNC before dropping some mean hammers. Roberts went back to the rear-naked choke and was finally able to get the tap.

**It should be noted that Weaver missed weight by 1.5 pounds

Mackenzie Dern def. Hannah Cifers by submission (Kneebar) at 2:36 of round 1: Strawweight

The fighters clinched up and Cifers was refusing to be taken down. They exchanged for a bit on the feet, until Dern was finally able to hit a takedown. Well, she botched the takedown but got the fight to the floor. That’s where she dove for a kneebar leaving Cifers forced to tap out.
