The latest edition of the UFC’s Esports league, featuring their game UFC 4, wound to a close yesterday.
The competition had been running for 6 weeks featuring the world’s best 16 EA Sports UFC 4 players (PS4). The finale went live yesterday, but if you missed it, and you want to check out the 7+ hour long stream (or just skip to the end to see who won), check out the video below:
The champion of this series was awarded $2,000 and title of UFC Esports League Champion.
That’s a pretty small prize for a multi-billion dollar company. However, it’s not that much of a surprise given that a recent co-main event fighter cried tears of joy after receiving a $50,000 bonus. Later Cheyenne Buys stated that she came into her fight at UFC Vegas 33 with a negative balance in her bank account and a loan that would wipe out the $10,000 to show, $10,000 to win purse she was getting paid on the night.
Buys is not alone when it comes to fighters who struggle to break even or even lose money while pursuing their dreams of becoming UFC champions.
It also be noted that, unlike all the other professional athletes who feature in EA Sports games like FIFA, Madden and NBA2K, UFC fighters do not receive a cut from any video games and that their UFC contracts grant the UFC the right to exploit their name and image in perpetuity.
