It’s a bigger story when Nicco Montano’s fights aren’t cancelled at this point.

Former UFC women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano pretty much weighed in as a featherweight for her bantamweight fight vs. Wu Yanan.

Montano came in at a staggering 143 lbs at Friday’s UFC Vegas 33 weigh-ins, whereas Yanan made weight at 135.5 lbs. A disparity that large is enough to get a fight cancelled, and that’s what happened.

The 32-year-old Montano (4-3) hasn’t fought since losing to Julianna Pena in 2019 in what was her return to 135 lbs. She did not compete at all in 2020 due to numerous cancellations ranging from injury to a positive COVID-19 test to failed medical clearance. Her weight cutting problems were profiled in a soon to be released documentary centered around her cancelled 2018 title bout vs. Valentina Shevchenko.

With Montano’s struggle to make the contracted weight limit now stretching to a higher weight class, there will be question marks concerning the future of Montano on the UFC roster.

UFC Vegas 33, which started with 15 fights, now has just 11 after Ronnie Lawrence vs. Trevin Jones was also nixed due to weight cutting effects.
