Round 1

Yan comes out aggressively to start and immediately gets hit with a double leg and gets taken down. Some scrambling ensues but Yan can’t ever quite get out from under Esparza and now Esparza is on top and in side control. Strong start for the former champion.

From bottom side, Yan is doing nothing at all with Esparza peppering occasional knees to the body. Some elbows from Yan cause Esparza to adjust and in the scramble Yan regains half-guard. Yan controlling the open wrist and looking to get full guard but Esparza deftly defends and then steps over to side control, where Yan again just goes to block the mount pass.

Not a lot of offense from Esparza though who walks around to north-south but gets nothing and goes back to side-control. Yan has nothing serious to offer from her back it seems and Esparza is popping her with baby punches. Nothing damaging but enough to keep things on the floor.

Yan makes a move and Esparza postures and is in north-south with a kimura grip in. She can’t get anything with it though and abandons it to land some pretty solid elbows as the rounds ends.

MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Esparza.

Round 2

Esparza split Yan’s head at the end of the first round and if you wanted to give her a 10-8 for that round, it wouldn’t be wrong.

Yan comes out a little cagier to start this round and lands a few straights but Esparza grabs a snatch single and drags Yan down. On top again, Esparza is now going to work with much more aggressive ground-and-pound. More activity, more offense, and now Esparza is passing to half-guard. Yan is able to recompose guard but Esparza is on the move again and now she passes to side control.

The increase in aggression from Esparza is forcing Yan to work more and she’s starting to look like she wants out of this one. Esparza steps over into the mounted crucifix and she opens Yan up with a big elbow. Yan is bucking but can’t get out and now Esparza is landing unanswered shots. Peterson is taking a close look here and Esparza keeps the pressure up and Peterson stops it!

Phenomenal performance from the former champion!
