UFC Vegas 18 video: Danilo Marques puts Mike Rodriguez to sleep with nasty rear-naked choke
Danilo Marques moved to 2-0 in his UFC career on Saturday night while also cementing his first finish inside the octagon.
The ground specialist who trains regularly with submission wizard Demian Maia showed off his superior Brazilian jiu-jitsu by taking Mike Rodriguez down multiple times over two rounds before sinking in a rear naked choke that finished the fight. The end came at 4:52 into the second round as Marques moved his overall record to 11-2 to kick off the main card at UFC Vegas 18.
“Listen, I expected to finish him in the first round,” Marques said about his victory. “It was what it was. I’m good. I’m feeling very well and getting better for the next one.”

It was evident from the first seconds of the opening round that Marques wanted to keep the fight on the floor after immediately rushing across the octagon and dragging Rodriguez to the ground. Marques was methodical with his offense as he attempted to maintain his position, pepper away with punches and ensure Rodriguez wouldn’t be able to separate from him.
The strategy paid off as Rodriguez appeared somewhat gun shy once he actually got back on the feet but he wasn’t there for long as Marques was relentless with his takedown attempts.
After bringing Rodriguez down to the canvas in the second round, Marques had no intentions of letting him up again.
The Brazilian shredded through Rodriguez’s defense this time around to take the back and then setting up his submission. Marques eventually fought off the hands and slipped his arm under the chin to lock on the rear naked choke.
Despite the best efforts to break free from Marques’ submission, Rodriguez eventually went to sleep, which forced the referee to stop the fight in the second round.
Marques appears to be a solid addition to the UFC’s growing light heavyweight division as he wins his fourth consecutive fight overall with his second submission during that streak.
