Molly McCann explains laying gloves in cage after UFC Vegas 18 loss to Lara Fritzen Procopio
Molly McCann appeared to retire after a loss to Lara Fritzen Procopio on the UFC Vegas 18 prelims, but that wasn’t the case.
McMann laid her gloves on the canvas before judges declared Procopio the winner via unanimous decision in the flyweight contest. As she later explained, the gesture was not related to her professional career.

“Before I get into it,” she wrote. “I left the gloves in the cage for my dad. There’s still fight in this old dog yet.”
McMann previously has spoken about the inspiration she took from her father, who passed away before she made it into the UFC. The fight against Procopio fell on what would have been his birthday.
“I said, ‘Well, I’m going to give him the best f*cking birthday present ever,’” McCann told UFC.com. “When the chips are down, and I’m getting my head punched in, I’m getting nearly choked out, or I’m getting choked out, or I’m getting my orbital bone smashed to bits or I’m getting my nose broken with knees to the face, I don’t stop because of him, and I know how hard he fought for each day, and I’m going to fight harder. Fighters draw from pain, and he always wanted to see me fight [in Las Vegas], so I have to do it for him.”
The decision loss to Procopio marked the second straight setback for McCann, who opened her octagon career with a 3-1 run. Despite a strong armbar attempt in the second, she was consistently outgrappled by the Brazilian, who picked up her first octagon win after a debut loss against Karol Rosa.
