UFC Vegas 35 weigh-in results: Edson Barboza, Giga Chikadze on point for main event, prelim fighter misses by 4 pounds
Featherweight contenders Edson Barboza and Giga Chikadze, and a fresh set of The Ultimate Fighter standouts are set for Saturday’s main event.
The headliners are successfully made weight for UFC Vegas 35, which takes place at UFC APEX in Las Vegas, with Barboza coming in at 145 pounds and Chikadze at 145.5 pounds. Their matchup pits MMA Fighting’s No. 9-ranked featherweight, Barboza, against the No. 12-ranked Chikadze.
All four finalists from TUF 29 also successfully made weight. Bryan Battle fights Gilbert Urbina (stepping in as a replacement for Tresean Gore) in the middleweight final, and Ricky Turcios fights Brady Hiestand in the bantamweight final.
One fighter missed weight, preliminary competitor Mana Martinez. Martinez weighed in at 140 pounds, four pounds over the limit for his bantamweight bout opposite Guido Cannetti.
According to the UFC, the bout will proceed at a catchweight with Martinez forfeiting 30 percent of his purse to Cannetti as penalty.
Martinez’s miss is the latest bit of bad news in what has been a difficult August for him, with the recent passing of his mentor and coach Saul Soliz and a booking at last weekend’s UFC Vegas 34 card being pushed back due to COVID-19 protocol.
