Valentina Shevchenko vs. Joanne Calderwood in the works for UFC 251 in June

Flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko won’t have to wait long for her next title defense as she’s expected to face Joanne Calderwood at UFC 251 on June 6.

Multiple sources confirmed to MMA Fighting that verbal agreements were in place for the fight following an initial report from ESPN. As of now, the UFC hasn’t made any official announcements regarding the fight or the location for the pay-per-view card in June.

Following a lopsided TKO victory over Katlyn Chookagian at UFC 247, Shevchenko said she wanted to stay busy and face the next best contender in the division. With a 5-0 record at flyweight including three title defenses, Shevchenko has already wiped out a lot of competition in the division but now she’ll face a new test in Calderwood.

The 33-year-old Scottish fighter will get the opportunity to fight for the title in June after posting a 3-1 record in the division. Calderwood most recently earned a split decision victory against Andrea Lee, which put her back in the win column after falling to Chookagian last June.

Calderwood was actually the first women’s fighter in the UFC to get a win at 125 pounds after she defeated Valerie Letourneau in June 2016 before the promotion officially instituted a 125-pound division.

Now Calderwood will look to scale an impossibly tall mountain while taking on arguably the most dominant champion on the UFC roster today.
