Bellator 239 results & video: Amosov takes decision over Ruth, Johnson KOs Fortune

Check out the results and highlights from Bellator 239, where Yaroslav Amosov took a scrappy decision over Ed Ruth in the main event.

The Bellator 239 main card just wrapped up with highly competitive affair between surging welterweights Ed Ruth and Yaroslav Amosov. Both men were hitting takedowns, but neither man was able to solidify a ground position. Both men were throwing blows, but the volume fell on the side of Amosov. When it was all said and done, it was Amosov who walked away with the unanimous decision to remain undefeated. Now sitting at 23-0, don’t be surprised to see Amosov fighting for Bellator gold in the near future.

Before that, lightweights Brandon Girtz and Myles Jury went the full 15-minutes in a rather decent scrap. Girtz came out aggressive, throwing heat and backing up his foe. He was able to get a crucial takedown in the second act to land a bunch of ground strikes and eat the clock. Jury rallied in the final frame, letting his strikes go and taking the back just before the bell. When the smoke had cleared, it was Jury who walked away with the unanimous decision. This snaps a three-fight losing streak for Jury, who gets his first promotional win.

A massive knockout took place at Bellator 239 when Tim Johnson completely slept Tyrell Fortune with an insane right hook in the first round. This was an epic finish, but more importantly, it snaps a two-fight losing skid and gives him his first Bellator win. Talk about scary! Opening up the main card, Valentin Moldavsky took a dominant unanimous decision over Javy Ayala, even earning two scores of 30-24. Moldavsky put on a wrestling clinic with a rinse and repeat style, giving Ayala zero moments in this fight. He now owns a perfect 4-0 record under the Bellator banner.

Main card:

Yaroslav Amosov def. Ed Ruth by unanimous decision (29-28 x3): Welterweight

The first round was quite competitive. Both men shot for takedowns, but neither man was able to solidify top position. In the striking, it was pretty back and forth. Both fighters pumped their jabs and attacked with leg kicks. Amosov had a little more variety in his attack. The second round was just as competitive as the first. Amosov got off early, setting a pace with a variety of volume. Both men shot in for takedowns and both men failed. Then, Ruth was able to find top position for a moment, followed by Amosov finding top position for a bit. The rounded ended on the floor with the fighters in a stalemate.

The final round saw Amosov pour in some early volume with his boxing. Ruth slowed that down with stinging counter crosses. Amosov shot in and got a takedown, but Ruth managed to spin out and take the back. Amosov stood up but Ruth took him back to the mat. Amosov stood up and escaped, and went back to pushing the pace with his volume punching. Ruth kept throwing, but nowhere near as much as Amosov was. After the final bell, both men fell to their backs in exhaustion.

Myles Jury def. Brandon Girtz by unanimous decision (29-28 x3): Lightweight

Girtz started hot, bring heavy hands right to Jury. He was connecting when he blitzed, although only one of his strikes was landing. Jury snuck in some mean knees to the body, but the aggression was being brought by Girtz. Although Girtz did land some bombs, Jury wore them all exceptionally well and didn’t seem hurt at any point.

The second round saw Girtz come out with the same aggression before snagging a takedown. Jury rolled for an armbar, but Girtz wasn’t having it and returned to the full guard. Girtz was able to rack up short shots while on the ground, as well as eating up some clock. back on the feet, Jury accidentally poked Girtz in the eye, resulting in a pause for the doctor to come take a look. The fight resumed, and Girtz attacked with his looping punches, landing here and there. Jury shot in for his own takedown, and was able to take the back while Girtz was standing. The round ended before anything could happen.

Jury had more urgency in the final frame. He was landing a lot more strikes, first with his kicks and then working off of his jab. He found success countering Girtz as he was wining his shots. Jury ended up taking the back again, sinking his hooks and taking the fight to the ground. The bell sounded just after the fight hit the floor.

Tim Johnson def. Tyrell Fortune by KO at of round 1: Heavyweight

Johnson came out giving Fortune a lot of different looks with a varied of strikes. Fortune responded with some hard right crosses of his own. Johnson would then try a couple of times with a flurry, but the footwork of Fortune kept him out of harms way. Then, Johnson connected with a massive right hook that knocked out Fortune on impact. No followup was necessary. Yikes!

Valentin Moldavsky def. Javy Ayala by unanimous decision (30-25, 30-24 x2): Heavyweight

Moldavsky put on a wrestling clinic in the opening round. He quickly achieved the underhooks, and then took his foe right to the floor. Ayala was quick to get to his feet, but it was just the beginning of a rinse and repeat cycle. Anytime Ayala would work to stand up, Moldavsky stayed attached and brought the fight back down into his world. The second round was more of the same. Moldavsky got an early takedown, and Ayala stuck on the wrong end of a grind. Ayala kept trying, but just couldn’t get any seperation. Come the final round, Ayala was able to throw an actual punching combo in the opening sequence, but it wasn’t long before he was on his back. The rest of the bout saw Moldavsky own the wrestling as well as the top position.
