UFC Uruguay results: Grappling champion Rodolfo Vieira taps out Oskar Piechota in UFC debut

Rodolfo Vieira lived up to his nickname as “The Black Belt Hunter” with a second-round submission to finish Oskar Piechota in his UFC debut.

Multi-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion had to battle through some nerves and perhaps a little bit of fatigue but he still managed to put Piechota away with a picture-perfect arm triangle choke to earn the victory at 4:26 into the second round.

“I feel really happy,” Vieira said following his win. “I feel really good being in the biggest MMA organization in the world.

Some early striking exchanges finally gave way to Vieira setting up a double-leg takedown that planted Piechota on the mat as the multi-time grappling champion looked to apply his world class ground game. Vieira was constantly threatening to pass Piechota’s defense while raining down punches from the top but he never got the chance to truly advance his position because the fighters were pressed up against the cage.

Just before the horn sounded, Piechota managed to get back to his feet and rattle off several stinging elbows to the side of Vieira’s head as he attempted to grab another takedown before the round came to an end.

It appeared that perhaps Vieira was slowing down at the start of round two but he still managed a well-timed takedown to put Piechota back down into his world on the ground. The repeated attempts were definitely zapping the Brazilian’s energy but Piechota spent the majority of his time defending the wrestling offense from Vieira.

Fatigued or not, Vieira’s methodical approach on the ground eventually paid off while slowly but surely slipping through Piechota’s guard to then move into mount. Once Viera was in position, he quickly latched onto an arm triangle choke and once he tightened his squeeze, Piechota had no choice but to tap out.

The Blackbelt Hunter adds another to his list.

Now 6-0 in his career, Vieira can celebrate a win in his Octagon debut and there’s little doubt he’s going to have a lot of eyes on him going forward as the highly decorated grappling champion looks to make waves in the UFC.
