Tyron Woodley vs. Robbie Lawler 2 set for UFC on ESPN 4
Robbie Lawler is getting another shot at Tyron Woodley.
MMA Fighting’s Marc Raimondi confirmed with sources that Woodley and Lawler will meet in a welterweight rematch at UFC on ESPN 4 at Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on June 29. ESPN was first to report the matchup.
In their first encounter back at UFC 201 on July 30, 2016, Woodley defeated Lawler by first-round knockout to become the UFC welterweight champion.
“The Chosen One” went on to successfully defend the title four consecutive times (once via majority draw) against Stephen Thompson (at UFC 205 and UFC 209), Demian Maia (at UFC 214), and Darren Till (at UFC 228) before dropping it in a five-round unanimous decision loss to Kamaru Usman at UFC 235 in March.
With the loss, Woodley fell to 19-4-1 in his career and 9-3-1 in the UFC.
Lawler (28-13, 1 NC) has lost three of his last four and is coming off of a first-round submission loss to Ben Askren at UFC 235, a result that wasn’t without controversy as referee Herb Dean ruled that Lawler was choked unconscious only to have Lawler spring up and immediately protest the stoppage. Regardless, the result stood, and Lawler now has the chance to pick up a high-profile win that will not only keep him in title contention, but avenge just the second knockout loss of his 18-year MMA career.
