Jon Jones teases Stipe Miocic clash for July

You’d be hard-pressed to find a fan who wouldn’t at least by slightly intrigued by a matchup between UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic.

Jones knows it too. The 31-year-old has often discussed a potential jump up in divisions, but has spent his entire UFC career competing at 205 pounds. Though a few light heavyweight challengers like Thiago Santos and Johnny Walker have built momentum in recent months, it sounds like “Bones” is setting his sights on bigger fish.

Namely Miocic, who has yet to be booked since a loss to Daniel Cormier cost him his UFC title and snapped his UFC record of three consecutive heavyweight title defenses. On Wednesday, Jones teased that he might be interested in fighting Miocic this summer:

“I don’t think you guys are ready to witness Stipe Miocic and I,” Jones wrote on Twitter. “Would July give you all enough time?”

Though Jones didn’t specify a date or event, one can safely assume he’s aiming for the UFC 239 pay-per-view card on July 6 in Las Vegas. Jones recently had a conflict with the Nevada Athletic Commission refused to license him for a bout with Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232 last December (the event would be moved to Inglewood, Calif., where Jones defeated Gustafsson to capture a vacant light heavyweight title) due to abnormal findings in some of his recent drug tests, but the NAC later cleared him for his most recent title defense at UFC 235 against Anthony Smith.

Miocic has long been holding out for a rematch with Cormier, so it remains to be seen whether Jones will be the one to convince him to take on a different challenge.
