Zhang entered her second title defense on a 21-fight win streak and coming off of an epic five-round battle with Joanna Jedrzejczyk. The Chinese star had already dispatched two former champions in Jedrzejczyk and Jessica Andrade, and Namajunas was to be next on the list.
Instead, “Thug Rose” became the first woman to defeat Zhang in eight years and she did so in emphatic fashion, needing just 78 seconds to land a head kick that put the defending champion down and out. With the win, Namajunas began her second reign as UFC strawweight champion.
Not long after, an immediate rematch was booked between the two for the co-main event of UFC 268, which goes down Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
