Bellator 270: Queally vs Pitbull 2 preview, weigh-in results
Big gold belt up for grabs in the main event, and top bantamweights duke it out in the co-main.
Bellator returns this week with another international event, which as a bonus treat is an early afternoon card.
This one’s got some major stakes at the top, with the main event being a rematch between Bellator mainstay Patricky Pitbull (23-10) and Irish talent Peter Queally (13-5, 1 draw). Queally was victorious in their first encounter due to a cut which led to a doctor stoppage. Patricky’s brother Patricio has vacated the lightweight belt, so now this bout will be for the 155lb title as well, making all of this even more dramatic.
Queally had toiled around the European scene picking up wins, but it was his victory over prospect Ryan Scope that earned him major visibility. With a strong clinch and a straightforward boxing game, Queally manages to outlast opponents and really do damage down the line. But the Pitbull brothers are remarkably well-rounded and very spry athletes. Patricky still throws heat and snipes with counters. Having felt each other out in their first encounter, there’s little doubt they’ll both come into this one making adjustments and being a little more calculating that before.
James Gallagher (11-1) returns to action against another sensational bantamweight in Patrick “Patchy“ Mix (14-1). Gallagher’s got his striking and submissions in order, and continues to evolve with four straight wins. Three of those were submissions, and he’s looking like a million bucks while doing it. But Mix is a former title challenger for good reason. Long and effective striking, good sprawls and a varied submission arsenal of his own, Mix is a tough out for anyone. While he suffered a defeat at the hands of current champ Juan Archuleta, that’s a loss that can be viewed as nothing more than growing pains.
It should be noted that Mix didn’t look great on the scale and managed to miss weight for this one, which may affect his performance.
Another longtime Bellator fighter returns to action as Daniel Weichel (41-12) makes the walk to the cage against Portuguese heavy-hitter Pedro Carvalho (11-5). Weichel remains a threat standing and on the ground, but Carvalho still launches bombs and can be hard to take down.
English talent Lee Chadwick (26-15, 1 draw) faces Lithuanian big boy Arunas Andriuskevicus (15-4), and sensational Dutch striker Brian Hooi (16-7) meets Italian talent Daniele Scatizzi (10-5).
