‘This might not be the sport for her’ - Dana White on Nicco Montano’s latest fight cancellation

It’s not an announcement that Montano will be released from the roster, but it may be an indicator that it could happen.

Nicco Montano has been in the UFC for four years, yet for a myriad of reasons she’s rarely been inside the Octagon.

Montano was supposed to fight on last Saturday’s UFC Vegas 33 card against Wu Yanan, but a horrible weight cut and seven-pound weight miss resulted in yet another cancellation. Her weight cutting issues have now transcended two divisions and it has UFC president Dana White questioning Montano’s future in MMA.

“I don’t know off the top of my head, but over three or four of her fights have been canceled,” White said to UFC Arabia’s Farah Hannoun. “I think that no matter what weight class you put her at, she seems to have a hard time making weight. This might not be the sport for her.”

Back in 2018, Montano was stripped of the women’s flyweight title after she was unable to make weight and was hospitalized on the eve of her UFC 228 co-main event vs. Valentina Shevchenko. She has had nine UFC matchups cancelled to date, including twice for bad weight cuts, once for failed medical clearance following a car accident, a positive COVID-19 test, and a training camp injury. Montano has had fights cancelled due to her opponents pulling out, including when Sijara Eubanks couldn’t fight for the title when her weight cut failed.

The last time Montano competed was a decision loss to Julianna Pena in July of 2019. At this point, it’s fair to wonder whether or not her next fight will take place in the UFC.
