Triller hires longtime HBO Boxing voice Jim Lampley
Lampley hasn’t called any boxing matches since HBO Boxing shuttered at the end of 2018.
It happened. It happened!
On Tuesday it was announced that award-winning boxing blow-by-blow commentator Jim Lampley will join Triller Fight Club broadcasts starting this month. Lampley was first behind the mic for boxing matches on ABC’s Wide World of Sports before joining HBO, where he was the lead voice for 30 years.
“It is an honor and a privilege to welcome the preeminent voice in boxing, Jim Lampley, to Triller Fight Club,” Triller CEO Ryan Kavanaugh said in an official press release. “We will blend all the best elements of music, entertainment and sports, and there is no one better to help lead our broadcasts for fans of all ages than Jim.”
“I am impressed that Triller Fight Club is aggressively seeking to put together the best telecast possible, and it is that mentality that makes Triller the best possible platform for my return to ringside,” said Lampley. “This first telecast features Teofimo Lopez, conqueror of the great Vasiliy Lomachenko and an exciting new talent who has already made a historic mark on the sport. That says it all for me.”
HBO Boxing closed its doors in 2018 after 45 years in the business. Lampley has stayed with HBO even after the end of its live boxing programming but otherwise hasn’t called any fights since then. He did not close the door on returning to blow-by-blow commentary and here he is, back in the business at the age of 72.
Lampley’s first assignment will be the June 19th pay-per-view in Miami, headlined by undefeated lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos Jr. There are no exhibitions with faded legends, celebrities, or YouTubers boxing this time. Musical performances will still be a part of Tiller PPVs so that’s not going away any time soon.
