UFC strawweight vet Randa Markos suffered her fourth straight loss in the most unfortunate fashion when she was disqualified for an illegal upkick that rendered opponent Luana Pinheiro unable to continue at UFC Vegas 25 on Saturday night.

The disqualification was called because referee Mark Smith ruled Markos’ upkick intentional. An unintentional ruling would have triggered a no-contest because the foul had occurred in the first two rounds of the three-round fight. The official time of stoppage was 4:16 of the first round.

Just moments before the fight’s end, Markos’ fate had hung in the balance after she took an accidental poke to the eye that prompted a checkup from the cageside doctor. After a short break, she signaled she was able to continue and went right after Pinheiro, winging punches until she was tossed to the canvas with a head and arm throw – a move to which she repeatedly fell prey.

After hitting the canvas, Markos tried to kick off Pinheiro and wound up landing flush while her opponent was still downed. Pinheiro teetered backward and slowly fell onto her back. She appeared woozy as officials attended to her and reportedly asked if she’d lost the bout.

Markos was visibly emotional at the result. The Canadian has lost five of her past six UFC bouts.

Pinheiro, a Contender Series vet, wins her first octagon bout in an unusual way and has won seven straight in her current streak.
