Morning Report: Anderson Silva says it’s ‘completely terrible’ that the UFC blocked Georges St-Pierre from boxing

Now that he is officially done with the UFC, it’s clear that Hall of Famer Anderson Silva has some issues with the organization’s business practices of late.

This past October, Silva finally ended his 14-year career with the UFC following a knockout loss to Uriah Hall. Now Silva is set to make his transition to boxing next month when he faces Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in a bout on June 19. The former middleweight champion isn’t the only UFC Hall of Famer looking to make moves in boxing though. Recently, Georges St-Pierre confirmed rumors that he was in talks to box Oscar De La Hoya for De la Hoya’s return to the ring; however, UFC President Dana White prevented this from happening as, unlike with Silva, St-Pierre is still under contract. It was an action that Silva called “completely terrible.”

“I think it no make sense, especially because Georges did a lot for the sport, especially for UFC,” Silva said while talking to media during an open workout before his boxing bout with Chavez Jr. “Why you hold the guy? This no makes sense...

“Georges is a fighter. You can’t hold a fighter. It’s the same if you take the lion in the jungle and put him inside the cage. The lion is going to die. You can’t do that. Nobody can do that. This makes no sense. This is terrible, terrible. Completely terrible.”

Silva and the UFC did not end their relationship on the best note. During the end of his UFC run, Silva made some comments about how the company had changed since Zuffa sold the company to WME in 2016 and even his exit from the promotion was under odd circumstances. The UFC promoted Silva’s October bout against Hall as Silva’s retirement fight and while that now appears to be true with Silva confirming recently he’s done with MMA, at the time Silva did not seem like he was actually retiring, just moving on from the UFC. This, in turn, seemed to aggravate Dana White who lobbed heavy criticism at Silva during that event’s post-fight press conference.

So with Silva exiting the UFC under rocky circumstances, it’s not surprising that “The Spider” isn’t thrilled with the way St-Pierre has been treated in this instance; however, Silva also seems reticent to get into a public feud with the company or its president, preferring to leave that part of his life in the past.

“First of all, I think when you do your job, especially fight in the level me and Georges do it, people need to respect,” Silva said. “Georges worked hard to make a lot of things for UFC. It makes no sense, Dana White holding Georges St-Pierre. I have my personal opinion about Dana, and I’m not anymore in UFC. I don’t like to talk about UFC because everything I do inside UFC is done for me. I do my best, I put in my heart in the company but now it’s a page in my life that’s done.”
