GSP reveals rules for proposed De La Hoya bout that made it ‘less dangerous’
GSP revealed the slight modifications made for that proposed bout with Oscar De La Hoya.
Georges St-Pierre isn’t likely to face Oscar De La Hoya anymore as they couldn’t secure the UFC’s approval, but the MMA legend has revealed the proposed rules for that boxing match.
The two-division UFC champion actually disclosed the details while on an interview discussing a potential switch for either Jake or Logan Paul, and the odds they can survive in the UFC.
“The problem with UFC, it’s a really serious sport that you can be really badly damanged. In boxing there are ways of tweaking it. For example, I was offered to have a fight with Oscar De La Hoya, but the rules were different because we were both retired,” St-Pierre told MMA Joe.
“It would’ve been bigger gloves, two-minute rounds, eight rounds,” he revealed. “So the terms were different to accommodate, to make it more like a show. It’s less dangerous. Part of the profit, part of our purses would have been given to a charity. Unfortunately it did not happen, but it would have been fun.
“It’s a different form of entertainment, and with boxing you can tweak it like this — you can change the gloves — in MMA you can’t really do that.”
Two-minute rounds would’ve been an interesting change, and it’s also the same length used for the exhibition bout between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr.
St-Pierre just turned 40, and should the bout have pushed through, it would’ve been his first boxing match. De La Hoya would’ve had the experience edge, but he is already 48, and hasn’t fought in 13 years.
GSP still has an active UFC contract despite being retired for two years, and reportedly asked to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov again now that they have both hung up the gloves.
