UFC 258 live blog: Kamaru Usman vs. Gilbert Burns

This is the UFC 258 live blog for Kamaru Usman vs. Gilbert Burns, the welterweight main event for Saturday’s fight card at UFC APEX in Las Vegas.

Usman, the reigning welterweight champion and the No. 5 ranked pound-for-pound fighter on the promotion’s top-15 list, attempts the third defense of his belt against Burns, a former training partner at Blackzilians and Sanford MMA. The booking is the third time the pair have been booked to fight each other after their initial pairing at UFC 251 was called off when Burns tested positive for COVID-19. In Burns’ place went Jorge Masvidal, who was soundly outpointed in a five-round contest. A subsequent attempt to get Burns the title shot this past December at UFC 256 was scrapped, and the contest was rescheduled again.

Burns, the No. 1 ranked welterweight, has won six straight fights, most recently outpointing ex-champ Tyron Woodley in March at UFC on ESPN 9.
