Conor McGregor and Tony Ferguson may be laying the groundwork for a fight with one another sooner rather than later.
Earlier this week, McGregor went on a Twitter rant, reacting to the new lightweight landscape following UFC 249, and Justin Gaethje’s interim title winning performance over Tony Ferguson. Among McGregor’s comments was a criticism of both Ferguson’s performance and his overall skill in general.
I love Tony. We represented him amazingly at Paradigm sports and were betrayed for a promise of a baseball contract. But frame and preparation here was just embarrassing. His methods and conversation are humorous/enjoyable but he was never the level perceived. Although tough.

Ferguson is one of the most successful fighters in UFC lightweight history, sporting a 15-2 record in the UFC and having claimed interim title gold in 2017. He was supposed to face lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 249 but the coronavirus intervened, and instead his fought Gaethje. That gamble did not pay off for Ferguson as Gaethje now has earned the title fight but it may still yield dividends for “El Cucuy” as McGregor now seems interested in a possible bout with him. And if that’s the case, Ferguson is already laying the groundwork for a battle, responding to McGregor’s Tweet yesterday.
@TheNotoriousMMA You’re Still My Bitch. You Never Represented Me According To Audie,.. If So Then You Worked For Me, & Withheld Money From Me. Focus On Putting The Bottle Down Kid. @BallengeeGroup Is Gold Standard, Must Be Hard Watching From The Sidelines. Keep It Up Chump -Champ pic.twitter.com/1nZT5eN1OZ

Never one to let anyone have the last word, McGregor responded to Ferguson, again mocking his performance from Saturday and the beating that Ferguson suffered at the hands of Gaethje.
Shut up and thank the nurses and doctors that plated back up your skull and stitched all those gashes up.

It’s international nurses day!
And learn how to box!
Fumbling over your feet like a fucking Buffoon. We’d be embarrassed to represent that at Paradigm Sports.

At two of the top lightweights in the sport, Ferguson and McGregor have had a simmering rivalry for some years now, however it has never truly boiled over, in part because their rivalry has paled in comparison to both men’s rivalry with current champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. But with Nurmagomedov locked in on a future title unification bout with Justin Gaethje, now may be the perfect time to let two of the most unique fighters in the UFC finally air it all out.

Conor.
Super excited for the LW Title bout in July!
— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) May 12, 2020
It’s my fault, over the last decade Ive spoiled the fight fans. Dominated Anthony for 25 minutes and that wasn’t exciting. Went back and forth with Tiago and Dominick for 25 minutes and that wasn’t exciting. Now Victory isn’t enough, if I’m not finishing I can’t be the best.

I’d love to have an exhibition fight at the catchweight of 220lbs before moving up to heavyweight. Who wants to take that L?
— Jon Bones Jones (@JonnyBones) May 12, 2020
I’d love to fight him again. I’m just waiting for the UFC to make the reward worth the risk. Unless the organization treat it like a super fight, I might as well stay on schedule fighting the next guy in line https://t.co/gBKBsGnrIk

DC throwing just a touch of shade at Stipe.
When I head home I’ll have a home gym in place. Full wrestling and grappling mat, cage door, 4 bikes , treadmill, 2 heavy bags and ground and pound dummy. I’m so excited about having all this available for camp. If you want it bad enough, you can make it happen. #andnewagain pic.twitter.com/sRQj9qb91h
