Woodley willing to fight on May 9, says he would embarrass Colby Covington

“But to fight me, he needs to be paid so much more because he knows he’s gonna lose.”

Tyron Woodley is just itching to get back into the Octagon, claiming in a recent interview with TMZ Sports that he wants to fight at the UFC’s proposed blockbuster pay-per-view event on May 9.

Woodley was supposed to return to the Octagon against Leon Edwards at UFC London, but the event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The former UFC welterweight champ then offered his services for UFC 249, but that, too, was cancelled after ESPN told Dana White to stand down.

“I want to fight sooner than later,” Woodley said, per MMA Fighting. “One, because I think there’s a chance that a fight could go down May 9th, and then they may have in their mind, ‘Okay, May 9th we’re gonna do a card, May 16th we’re gonna do a card,’ and just kind of keep doing a card every weekend. At any point, the government could come down and smack down and say, ‘No, stop.’ ESPN, Disney, whoever. So I feel like for me, fighting May 9th makes the most sense.”

Woodley doesn’t care about who he faces on May 9, but ‘The Chosen One’ was quick to mention Colby Covington as a potential opponent.

The 38-year-old says he has no interest in ‘Chaos’ but at the same time would love to embarrass the former interim welterweight champ and expose him as a mediocre fighter.

“It’s reasons why he’s asking the UFC for two to five million dollars to fight me and he’s never made that collectively in his entire career,” Woodley said of Covington. “But to fight me, he needs to be paid so much more because he knows he’s gonna lose. He’s gonna talk all this shit, he’s gonna get embarrassed, he’s gonna get hurt, he’s gonna lose, and then he wants to have enough money in the bank account just in case nobody wants to f*cking buy this gimmick anymore. So I’m trying to move past that. If that fight happens, fine, but I’m not talking about it anymore.”

Woodley hasn’t fought since he lost the welterweight title to Kamaru Usman last year, dropping a unanimous decision to ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ in the UFC 235 main event. The MMA vet is currently ranked #13 in the UFC men’s pound-for-pound rankings.
