Morning Report: Jon Jones and Israel Adesanya trade more barbs over Twitter

Over the last several weeks, the spread of coronavirus has completely shut down the sports world. Even the UFC was finally forced to cave in to outside pressure and indefinitely postpone all of their scheduled events. So fighters, like the rest of the world, are in lockdown, with nothing but time and an empty calendar. And given all this free time, it’s unsurprising that one of 2019’s biggest MMA feuds was reignited over the weekend.

Last year, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and middleweight champion Israel Adesanya spent much of the year lobbing shots at one another across the media. What started out as a simple desire to fight one another quickly devolved into one of the most acrimonious feuds in the sport and though the things have been mostly quiet between the two recently, yesterday “The Last Stylebender” blew all that up but taking a shot at Jones on Twitter, with a call back line to one of Jones’ most infamous faux pas.

Not too long afterwards, Jones responded to Adesanya with a pair of since-deleted Tweets, one a picture of Adesanya’s lone KO loss in kickboxing and the other a statement lamenting the fact that he is judged for his outside-the-cage troubles but that Adesanya isn’t mentioning the charitable work he does.

Jones has recently been vocal about providing charitable services during this global pandemic. However, in a much more high profile incident, Jones was recently arrested yet again, this time for aggravated DWI and negligent use of a firearm. He quickly plead guilty and received a four-day house arrest as well as one year of probation, topics Adesanya was quick to bring up in responding to Jones, including a Tweet where he included some of the footage of Jones during his arrest.

Jones has yet to respond to Adesanya and it’s possible he may not. The UFC light heavyweight champion recently admitted to having an “unhealthy relationship” with alcohol and appears to be trying to put his latest legal trouble behind him. But whether Adesanya will let him is another question entirely. Adesanya has been targeting a fight against Jones in 2021, after defending his middleweight title a few times. And with one title defense down and 2021 rapidly approaching, it seems Adesanya is intent on keeping that fight fresh in everyone’s mind.
