McGregor delivers €1 million in PPE supplies to Ireland hospitals

The UFC superstar is following through on his promise to bring much needed medical supplies to his homeland.

It seems that combat sports’ biggest star has truly put his money where his mouth is. Conor McGregor has taken to video over the last few weeks, imploring the citizens of Ireland to take lockdown seriously, all the while asking the government to ramp up safety measures and mobilize to fight the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Along the way, back in March, the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion published an interaction with Ireland’s minister of Finance and Public Expenditure & Reform Paschal Donohoe. In the message, McGregor promised to donate “€1 million euro worth of personal protective equipment.” Now it appears that equipment is being delivered.

In a series of Tweets sent out on April 12th, McGregor displayed truckloads of masks and other medical supplies in transit to hospitals around the country.

McGregor has urged the country to shut down travel, including airports, for all but medical supplies and personnel—as well as asking the country to mobilize the military to help maintain quarantine controls. He also recommended that the country put a halt to construction projects until the need for self isolation has past.

The delivery of large amounts of medical supplies, however, will likely have a much greater impact—with hospitals around the world experiencing shortages of the necessary equipment to perform their duties safetly, and with lower risk of contracting the coronavirus or transmitting it to others.

At the time of writing, Ireland has 10,647 confirmed cases of COVID-19, resulting in 365 deaths. That’s a five-fold increase in cases from when McGregor released his March 27th video statement calling for military mobilization, and a ten-fold increase in the number of people who have passed away as a result.
