Bookies slash odds for McGregor to be Ireland’s next president

Because of his efforts to help his home country through the COVID-19 pandemic, bookmakers have lowered the odds against Conor McGregor to be Ireland’s next president.

Former UFC two-division is taking the COVID-19 outbreak in his home country of Ireland a lot seriously. In late March, he called on the powers that be to implement stricter lockdown protocols to help curb the disease. And to top that off, he recently donated €1 million worth of PPE supplies to local hospitals.

These altruistic efforts were apparently recognized by citizens. Oddsmakers from BoyleSports, for one, have begun slashing odds against “The Notorious” to be the country’s next president from 500/1 to 100/1, according to Goss.ie.

“Conor McGregor is the latest celebrity to attract support for a stint in Áras an Uachtaráin,” BoyleSports spokesperson Leon Blanche said. “The Dubliner has being showing us his generous side supporting homeless families and our frontline workers in the fight against Covid-19.

“The UFC superstar is 100/1 from 500/1 to follow Michael D. Higgins as the next President of Ireland.”

After a tumultuous, controversy-filled 2019, McGregor has so far bounced back strong in 2020, notching his first Octagon win in over three years last January at UFC 246. Twitter arguments with Sinead O’Connor aside, he’s kept himself away from bad press, and instead focused on helping his country combat the disease, which has so far resulted in 730 deaths out of a total of 16,040 confirmed cases.
